Respite live-in care at home
A trusted carer moves in while you take a break, so your loved one stays safe and settled at home and you can rest properly.
A real break for family carers
Caring for someone you love, day after day, is hard work. Everyone needs a break, but many family carers feel they cannot leave.
Respite live-in care means a carer moves into the home while you are away, whether that is a holiday, a family event, your own hospital treatment or simply time to rest. Your loved one keeps their usual routine, in their own home, without the upheaval of a short stay in a care home.
Before you go, we match a carer and give you time to hand over: the routines, the likes and dislikes, the little things that make the day go well. Many families book the same carer each time, so respite becomes something everyone looks forward to.
Respite can also be a gentle way to try live-in care before deciding whether it is right long term.

What respite care at home looks like
- Before
- A handover with you: routines, contacts, medication and any worries. We can arrange an overlap day.
- During
- Your loved one’s days carry on as normal, with the carer living in.
- Updates
- A message or call as often as you choose.
- After
- A handover back to you, and notes on how things went.
The carer needs a private bedroom and takes a two-hour break each day. We arrange cover for breaks and holidays.
What a live-in carer can and can't do
Our live-in carers are experienced, trained and checked, but they are carers, not nurses. They provide practical and personal support, and work alongside the GP, district nurses and other professionals who look after the clinical side.
A live-in carer can help with
- Personal care and continence care

- Cooking and meals
- Housework and laundry

A live-in carer doesn't

Help for family carers
If you care for someone, you are entitled to a free carer’s assessment from your local council. It looks at your own needs and may lead to support, which can include help with the cost of breaks.
Local carers’ organisations across Surrey, Kent and Sussex also offer advice, groups and wellbeing support for family carers.
We recommend booking respite a few weeks ahead where you can, especially for school holidays and Christmas, though we will always try to help at shorter notice.
How much does live-in respite care cost?
The exact cost depends on the support needed, including how often the carer is woken at night. We will give you a clear figure on the first call, with no obligation.
Help may be available from your local council, NHS Continuing Healthcare and Attendance Allowance. See the full cost breakdown → Ways to fund live-in care →

Respite care at home: your questions
How long can respite live-in care last?
Respite live-in care usually runs from two weeks upwards, and it can be longer if you need it, for example while a family carer recovers from an operation. Let us know your dates and we'll tell you what's possible. Because the carer lives in, your loved one keeps their usual routine at home while you take a proper break, knowing someone is there day and night.
How far ahead should I book?
A few weeks ahead is ideal, especially for school holidays, summer and Christmas, when demand is highest. That gives time to match the right carer and arrange a handover before you leave. That said, call us even at short notice, for example if a family carer becomes unwell, and we'll tell you honestly how quickly we can help.
Can we have the same carer each time?
We'll always try. Many families book the same carer for every break, which helps your loved one feel settled and makes handovers quicker. If you know your dates for the year, tell us early so we can ask your preferred carer to keep them free. If they're not available, we'll match someone with similar experience and introduce them before the stay starts.
How much does respite live-in care cost?
Respite is charged at the same weekly rate as long-term live-in care: from £1,090 a week paid to the carer, plus our weekly agency fee of £250, and a one-off registration fee of £250. The household provides the carer's food and a private room. There are no long contracts, so you only pay for the weeks you need. Call us for an exact figure for your dates.
Can the council help pay for respite?
Possibly. Ask your local council for a carer's assessment for yourself and a needs assessment for your loved one. If the council agrees respite is needed, it may contribute to the cost, depending on a financial assessment, or offer a direct payment you can use to arrange care yourself. Attendance Allowance can also be put towards respite. Our council funding guide explains the process step by step.
Is respite at home better than a short stay in a care home?
It depends on the person. Staying at home means no packing, no new surroundings and no change of routine, which many people, especially those living with dementia, find much easier. It also avoids the unsettled few days that often follow a move. A short care home stay can suit people who enjoy company in a group setting. We're happy to talk through both options honestly before you decide.
What do I need to prepare before I go?
Prepare a list of medication and timings, key contacts including the GP and pharmacy, any care plan or notes from professionals, and the small details of the daily routine, such as how your loved one likes their tea and when they like to go to bed. Leave the emergency numbers somewhere easy to find. We'll go through it all with the carer at the handover so nothing is missed while you're away.
Are you regulated by the CQC?
Medicare People currently provides introductory live-in care services. We have submitted our application to the Care Quality Commission (CQC) and intend to introduce a fully managed live-in care service following registration. As an introductory agency, we find, check and introduce self-employed live-in carers, and the family agrees the day-to-day care with the carer directly. Before any introduction we carry out right-to-work, DBS and reference checks and interview every carer. Our team stays in touch after the carer starts, arranges relief cover for breaks and holidays, and finds a replacement carer if the match isn't working.
