Nursing Agencies vs Direct Hire in the UK
The differences between working through a nursing agency and being hired directly, including flexibility, pay and career goals, to help you choose.

Nurses in the UK can find work in two main ways: through a nursing staffing agency, or by being hired directly by a healthcare employer. Each route has its own advantages and drawbacks.
What is a nurse staffing agency?
A staffing agency supplies nurses to healthcare organisations on a temporary, contract or permanent basis. It matches each nurse with suitable facilities based on their skills, experience and availability.
What is direct hire?
With direct hire, a hospital or care provider employs the nurse itself. The employment contract is with that facility, and where sponsorship is needed the facility handles the immigration paperwork, so the nurse relies on its processes for updates.
Key factors to consider
Your career goals
Agency work gives you access to a wider range of facilities and a broader professional network. That suits nurses who want varied experience before settling on a specialism.
Work-life balance
Agency nursing usually offers more control over your schedule, including short-notice shifts. That helps if you are balancing work with family or study.
Pay and benefits
Agency nurses typically earn higher hourly rates and may have more opportunities for extra shifts.
Personal preferences
Think about the patients you want to work with, the type of facility and the working environment that suits you best.
Which is right for you?
There is no single right answer. It depends on your needs and goals. Research both options and talk to recruiters and nursing colleagues before you decide.
