Live-In Care That Helps People Stay Comfortable and Confident at Home

For many individuals, staying at home is closely linked to feeling confident, secure, and in control of daily life. When extra help becomes necessary, live-in care can provide the right level of support without taking away the comfort and familiarity that home offers. This makes it possible for people to continue living in the place they know best while receiving practical one-to-one assistance that fits around their own routines.

Our live-in care is designed to support both comfort and independence. Help may be needed with personal care, companionship, mobility support, meal preparation, or the smaller day-to-day tasks that make life feel easier and more manageable. Because the support is tailored to the individual, it can be delivered in a way that respects preferences, preserves dignity, and helps maintain a sense of normality within the home environment.

Live-In Care Frequently Asked Questions

Live-in care is a type of care at home where a dedicated carer lives in the home to provide one-to-one support with everyday life. It allows someone to remain in familiar surroundings while receiving personalised help that is built around their routines, preferences and level of need.

Support can include personal care, companionship, help with mobility, meal preparation, medication prompts and day-to-day household tasks. Because care is provided in the home and tailored to the individual, live-in care often offers more continuity, comfort and independence than moving into residential care.

For many families, it is a reassuring way to make sure a loved one stays safe, supported and well cared for in the place they know best.

Live-in care works by placing a dedicated carer in the home to provide one-to-one support with everyday life. Care is built around the individual, so support is tailored to their routines, preferences and level of need, rather than following a fixed schedule.

A live-in carer can help with personal care, mobility, meal preparation, companionship, medication prompts and other day-to-day tasks that make life at home easier and safer. Because support is provided in familiar surroundings, live-in care can offer greater continuity, comfort and reassurance than moving into residential care.

For families, it means knowing a loved one has consistent support at home, with care that can adapt as needs change over time.

A live-in carer provides one-to-one support at home, helping with the everyday tasks that allow someone to live safely and comfortably in familiar surroundings. Their role is built around the individual’s needs, routines and preferences, so care feels personal, consistent and reassuring.

Support may include personal care, help with mobility, meal preparation, medication prompts, companionship and assistance with day-to-day household tasks.

A live-in carer can also help maintain routines, encourage independence and provide families with reassurance that someone is there to offer regular support throughout the day.

Live-in care is suitable for people who need ongoing support with daily life but want to remain in the comfort and familiarity of their own home. It can be a good option for older adults who need help with personal care, mobility, meals, companionship or everyday routines, while still wanting to maintain as much independence as possible.

It may also suit people living with dementia, those recovering after illness or a hospital stay, and individuals whose needs are increasing over time but who do not want to move into residential care.

For many families, live-in care offers a reassuring way to provide consistent, one-to-one support at home that can adapt as circumstances change.

Live-in care and residential care offer different types of support, so the better option depends on the individual’s needs, preferences and circumstances.

For many people, live-in care can feel like the better choice because it allows them to remain in the comfort of home while receiving one-to-one support built around their routines, independence and daily life.

Residential care may be more suitable for people who prefer a shared care setting or whose needs are better met in that environment.

For families who want personalised support, continuity and the reassurance of care at home, live-in care is often a more flexible and familiar alternative.

In many cases, live-in care can be arranged relatively quickly, especially when support is needed after a change in circumstances such as illness, a hospital stay or increasing care needs at home.

The exact timeframe will depend on the individual’s needs, the type of support required and finding the right carer match.

At Medicare People, we aim to make the process as smooth and responsive as possible, helping families understand their options and put the right support in place without unnecessary delay.

Where care is needed urgently, we work to arrange suitable live-in care as promptly as possible.

Live-in care allows someone to remain in the comfort and familiarity of their own home while receiving one-to-one support tailored to their needs. For many people, this brings a greater sense of independence, continuity and emotional wellbeing than moving into residential care.

It can also provide practical day-to-day help with personal care, mobility, meals, companionship and everyday routines, all delivered in a way that fits around the individual rather than a fixed schedule.

For families, one of the biggest benefits is the reassurance of knowing a loved one is safe, supported and cared for at home.

Yes, live-in care can be a very good option for couples who want to continue living together at home while receiving the support they need.

Rather than facing the disruption of moving into residential care, live-in care can help both people remain in familiar surroundings, maintain shared routines and continue enjoying daily life together.

Support can be tailored around each person’s needs, whether one partner needs more help than the other or both require regular day-to-day assistance.

For many families, this makes live-in care a more personal, flexible and reassuring option for couples who value comfort, companionship and independence at home.

Yes. At Medicare People, we believe choosing the right live-in carer is an important part of creating the right support at home.

We take time to understand your needs, routines and preferences before introducing carers we believe could be a good fit.

You are then involved in the decision, with the opportunity to get to know your carer, ask questions and make sure the match feels right before any arrangement begins. Because our introductory model gives you more choice, you are not simply allocated a carer. Instead, you can choose someone you feel comfortable with and confident welcoming into your home.

The initial assessment is the first step in understanding the kind of live-in care that is needed and how support can be shaped around the individual. It gives us the chance to learn more about daily routines, personal preferences, the home environment and the level of help required, so any care arrangement feels appropriate, practical and personal from the outset.

It is also an opportunity for families to talk through concerns, ask questions and understand how live-in care would work in everyday life. From there, we can recommend the most suitable approach and begin identifying the right carer match, based on both care needs and compatibility.

If you need support during the night, live-in care can often be arranged to include help with overnight needs as well as daytime support. This may involve assistance with toileting, mobility, medication, reassurance during waking periods, or support if someone becomes unsettled and needs help.

The most suitable arrangement will depend on how often support is needed overnight and how disrupted the night is likely to be. Because live-in carers also need time to rest, live-in care is usually best suited to situations where night-time support is occasional or manageable within a normal routine.

During the initial assessment, we can talk through night-time needs in more detail and recommend the most appropriate setup based on the individual’s routines, level of support required and overall care needs.

Yes, live-in care can be arranged on a short-term basis as well as for longer-term support. It is often a helpful option after a hospital stay, during recovery, for respite, or when extra help is needed at home for a period of time.

At Medicare People, live-in care is usually arranged for a minimum of four days. For longer arrangements, carers will often work on a two weeks on, two weeks off basis while they rest, with another carer stepping in to provide continuity. In many cases, there are usually around four to six carers assigned to someone over time, helping ensure support remains consistent, reliable and manageable.

Short-term live-in care still provides personalised one-to-one support at home, helping someone remain safe, comfortable and well cared for in familiar surroundings.

Yes. A live-in carer can provide a wide range of one-to-one support at home, but there are some limits depending on the person’s needs and the type of care required. For example, a live-in carer would not usually carry out tasks that require a registered nurse or other healthcare professional, unless this has been specifically arranged and the person is appropriately qualified.

Live-in carers also need time to rest, sleep and take breaks, so they may not be the right option if someone needs constant overnight support or continuous hands-on care throughout every hour of the day and night. In some situations, additional support, specialist input or a different care arrangement may be needed.

During the initial assessment, we can talk through what support is needed and whether live-in care is the right fit, helping make sure the arrangement is safe, practical and well suited to the individual.

At Medicare People, live-in carers go through a thorough selection process to help ensure they are professional, dependable and well suited to supporting people at home. This includes background checks such as Right to Work verification, an enhanced DBS check and employment reference checks.

Carers also complete an aptitude assessment and interview process so we can assess their skills, suitability and approach to care. Once successful, they complete training and a structured onboarding period within a client placement, with oversight from their local Care Manager.

Our focus is not only on skills and experience, but also on compassion, reliability and the ability to provide thoughtful, personalised support in someone’s own home.

A live-in carer will usually work across a 12-hour period each day, providing up to 10 hours of support with a two-hour daily break. This helps ensure care remains safe, practical and sustainable, while also allowing the carer time to rest and recharge.

If the person receiving care cannot be left alone, a family member or another care provider will need to make sure their needs are covered during the carer’s break.

During the initial assessment, we can talk through daily routines and help make sure the care arrangement is suitable for the level of support required.

If the carer does not feel like the right fit, we will work with you to find a more suitable alternative. We understand that live-in care is about more than practical support alone. It is also about feeling comfortable with the person in your home and confident in the relationship.

That is why we take carer matching seriously from the outset, looking at routines, preferences, personality and overall compatibility as well as care needs.

If something does not feel right, we are here to listen, support you and help make changes so the arrangement feels more comfortable and reassuring.

The right option depends on the level of support needed at home.

Live-in care
Live-in care is usually suitable for people who need help with daily life, such as personal care, mobility, meals, companionship and everyday routines, while wanting to remain in familiar surroundings with one-to-one support.

Live-in nursing
Live-in nursing is generally more appropriate when someone has more complex or clinical needs that require the involvement of a qualified nurse. This may include situations where ongoing nursing input, specialist treatment or closer clinical oversight is needed at home.

During the initial assessment, we can talk through the person’s needs and help you understand which type of support is likely to be the most suitable.

For many families, that conversation provides clarity and reassurance at an important stage.

That depends on how much involvement you want in arranging and overseeing care.

Introductory live-in care
Introductory live-in care is often suited to families who want more choice and control, because you are introduced to carefully selected carers and manage the arrangement more directly, including the relationship and day-to-day practicalities.

Managed live-in care
Managed live-in care is usually better for families who would prefer the provider to take a more active role in overseeing support. In a managed arrangement, the care provider is typically responsible for supervision, reviews, adjustments to the care plan and ongoing coordination, which can offer extra reassurance and reduce the amount you need to manage yourself.

Both options can provide personalised live-in care at home, but the right model depends on the level of control, oversight and support that feels right for your circumstances.

During the initial assessment, we can talk you through both approaches and help you decide which one is likely to suit you best.

Live-in care is designed to be flexible, so support can be reviewed and adjusted as needs change over time.

At Medicare People, your dedicated Care Manager will regularly review the care arrangement to help ensure it continues to reflect the level of support required, working closely with the care team, the client’s family and any healthcare professionals involved.

If needs become more complex and go beyond what can be supported through live-in care, we can also help guide the next step.

Where appropriate, this may include a smooth transition to our live-in nursing service, so care can continue in a way that remains safe, suitable and well supported at home.

Live-in carers are trained to respond calmly and appropriately in an emergency, helping to keep the person safe while following the agreed care plan and emergency procedures.

This may include contacting the emergency services, seeking urgent medical help, notifying family members and taking the right immediate steps until further support is in place.

If you are receiving our managed live-in care service, you will also have the added reassurance of around-the-clock support from a local Care Consultant and our office-based team. If you are receiving our introductory live-in care service, the appointed family member or representative would usually be contacted in an emergency so they can help coordinate the next steps.

During the initial assessment, we can also talk through emergency arrangements in advance, so everyone feels clear, prepared and reassured about what would happen if urgent support is ever needed.

The cost of live-in care depends on the type of support you choose and how much ongoing oversight you would like.

With our introductory live-in care service, we connect you directly with a self-employed carer. This often provides a more cost-effective and transparent option for families who want more choice and control over the arrangement. Introductory live-in care starts from £1,090 per week. You pay the carer directly, along with a weekly agency fee to us of £250, and a registration fee of £250 including VAT when the service begins.

With managed live-in care, the provider takes full responsibility for overseeing the arrangement, including rotas, supervision and ongoing support. This offers a more hands-off option for families who would prefer greater day-to-day management and reassurance. Managed live-in care starts from £1,500 per week.

The right option will depend on the level of involvement you want, the support required and the overall care arrangement.

During the initial assessment, we can talk you through both approaches and help you understand which is likely to suit your circumstances best.

Support with the cost of live-in care may be available depending on your financial circumstances and the type of care needed. This can include help from your local authority, or NHS Continuing Healthcare through your local Integrated Care Board if a person’s needs are primarily health-related.

Many families do still pay for live-in care themselves, either fully or in part. In some situations, people may also look at other ways of funding care, such as care fees insurance or equity release, particularly when longer-term support is needed at home.

Because every situation is different, the best starting point is usually to understand what support may be available before deciding how the rest of the cost will be met.

At Medicare People, we can talk you through the main options and help you better understand the routes that may be open to you, so you can make an informed decision for yourself or your loved one.

The best first step is usually an initial conversation so we can understand the person’s needs, daily routines and the type of support that may be required at home. From there, we can talk you through the available options, answer any questions you may have and explain how the process works in practice.

If live-in care feels like the right fit, we can then arrange an initial assessment and begin looking at the most suitable care approach, including whether introductory or managed live-in care is likely to be the better option.

Our aim is to make the process feel clear, supportive and well organised, so you can move forward with confidence.

What's The Process For Arranging Live-In Care

Arranging live-in care is often more straightforward than people expect. Rather than facing the disruption of moving into residential care, live-in care allows someone to remain in the comfort of their own home while receiving personalised one-to-one support.

The process usually begins with an initial conversation, where we take time to understand the person’s needs, routines, preferences and the type of support that may be required. This is also an opportunity to ask questions, talk through concerns and explore whether live-in care is the right fit.
From there, we can arrange an initial assessment to build a clear picture of the support needed at home. This helps us recommend the most suitable care approach, whether that is introductory or managed live-in care, and begin shaping a care plan around the individual.

Once the care plan is in place, we begin identifying a suitable carer based not only on care needs, but also on personality, routines and overall compatibility. Our aim is to help create a care arrangement that feels personal, reassuring and well matched from the outset.

Throughout the process, we are here to make things feel as clear, supportive and well organised as possible, so you and your family can move forward with confidence.
